Evaluation of Morphology

Morphology can identify the correct classification of a cell type. Distinctions between lymphoblasts and myeloblasts are apparent in the size, amount of cytoplasm, the nuclear chromatin pattern, and the presence of distinct or indistinct nucleoli.

Some identifying characteristics include:

Size: The myeloblast is larger than the lymphoblast.

Amount of cytoplasm.

Presence of Nucleoli.

Nuclear chromatin pattern: The myeloblast’s nuclear chromatin is less dense as in a lymphoblast.

The myeloblast may show a presence of azurophilic granules.

The presence of Auer rods completely rules out the possibility of lymphoblasts.
